Sheffield Mayor welcomes chief back to work

SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF)- Sheffield Police Chief Greg Ray is back at work after spending nearly four months on suspension.

Now Mayor Ian Sanford, who filed the sanctions against the chief, is speaking out about Ray's reinstatement.

He said he has no regrets and hopes this process will be a learning experience for everyone involved.

Ray was greeted with handshakes and hugs from employees who said they're glad he's back and for things to get back to normal.

Sanford said he is ready to put this case in the past and hopes communication will improve between all city leaders and officials.

"I think some good came out. It got it out in the open. Chief Ray knows what we expect from him," said Sanford. "It's a new day. I have respect for the Civil Service Board. I think I appreciate and respect the process. It really wasn't fun for any party involved."

Sanford said he plans to sit down with Ray on Monday to talk about moving forward.
