3 Sensational Cities To Visit In Puglia

While you may have plenty of coastlines to explore in Puglia, hotel accommodation in the centre of its cities can be just as rewarding. Its easy to get around in most of the cities in the Puglian region, so it's not hard to get out and explore.

Here are some suggestions when visiting just three cities in Puglia; hotel bookings should be made for any of them well in advance as this is a very popular region of Italy and it isn't hard to see why.

Gallipoli

Gallipoli boasts a host of attractions, all well worth seeing and many of them unique. For example, while many Italian cities have an "old town", Gallipolis old town isnt actually on the mainland at all. You have to walk across a bridge to visit the island on which the original old town is situated. It is, however, a key part of the town's history and will give you the opportunity to examine the old walls of the town, which are thought to be well over five hundred years old.

Foggia

If you're planning on staying in the vicinity of Foggia in Puglia, hotel options are many and varied. The city is actually named after the pits where huge amounts of wheat were once stored, in centuries gone by. Nowadays the city is very different, of course, but no less interesting for that.

When you visit here you should definitely make time to see the cathedral of Santa Maria de Fovea, one of the main highlights of the area. You can also pay a visit to Passo di Corvo, an archaeological park dating back to Neolithic times. You certainly wont go hungry either, as Foggia is renowned for its many eateries dotted around the city.

Bari

Perhaps we are saving the best for last here as many argue this is one of the most beautiful parts of Puglia. Hotel options abound, and wherever you stay you will never be far from some stunning sights to explore. For example St Nicholas Basilica is a superb architectural sight, both during the day and at night when it is lit up in a dramatic way. The basilica is nearly a thousand years old, yet is preserved so well it looks no less solid than it would have done on the day of its completion. Swabian Castle can also be found in Bari, and is a popular tourist attraction. It is large and imposing and holds a number of exhibitions throughout the year.

As you can see, this lovely Italian region has much worth seeing if you want to get away from the coastal areas for a refreshing change. There is a wealth of history to be explored in the cities, and while these three only scratch the surface of what is on offer, they show you just how compelling and interesting a region it is.
