Senator Conroy has threatened to build a link to the USA to drive prices down. Communications minister Stephen Conroy has threatened to fund a new submarine link between Australia and the US out of the National Broadband Network budget if international pricing does not fall to reasonable levels. In a speech boasting about his "unfettered legal power" over Australian telco regulation, Senator Conroy told a conference this week that he could order a Government-funded subsea cable if existing operators "do not start responding to market pressure".

HDD volumes are apparently back to pre-Thai-flood levels, but prices aren't. HDD shipments in 2012 for the overall computer market, including PCs, are forecast to reach 524 million drives, up 4.3% percent from 502.5 million units last year, according to an IHS report. Hard drive prices, however, will remain high, and prices are not expected to fall to pre-flood levels until 2014, IHS stated in a report earlier this year.

Meanwhile Intel have released some Clover Trail Atom details, with coverage on PC Perspective and HotHardware. The Z2760 is a dual-core Atom-based chip with a 1.8GHz clock frequency and support for Intel Hyperthreading technology which allows two cores to process four threads to enhance performance in multithreaded workloads. Clover Trail is manufactured using Intel's 32nm process node and is targeted at ultra-mobile computing applications like tablets and adjacent convertible devices. Imagination Technologies' PowerVR SGX545 graphics core has been coupled with the Atom architecture on the Z2760 for what Intel claims will be the best, low-power Windows 8 tablet experience available when they begin to ship from a number of top name manufacturers in the coming months.

There's an independent online sci-fi/thriller series called CONTINUUM.. and you can now watch all of season 1 for free here on YouTube. "Continuum" is a serialized story about a young woman who awakens aboard an adrift space ship with no memory of who she is or how she got there and at the mercy of the ship's mysterious computer.
