Three bands combined on Sunday, March 18th at Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh to mark 25 years of brass playing.? Several musicians present were among the founding members of the Triangle Brass Band (TBB) back in 1986. The Triangle Youth Brass Band (TYBB) and the Triangle Youth Brass Ensemble(TYBE) combined with the adult band to create a sound guest announcer David Ballantyne, of WCPE fame, quipped might ?raise the roof? of the concert hall.
Each of the bands played alone for the first half. Charismatic guest soloist Jens Lendemann joined the adult brass band for an exhilarating world premier, and again for the world premier of his new blue trumpet. For the second half the three bands shared the stage for a huge and exciting sound.
Tony Granados is the director of the bands, and conducts TBB and TYBB. Jesse Rackley conducts TYBE. In addition, there were several guest conductors: Dr. David Reed, David Rockefeller, Michael Votta, Brian Doyle, and Robert Hunter.
The only thing disappointing about the concert last Sunday was the empty seats. These bands should be heard! Any lover of live classical music should plan to attend the next concert.? In fact, any lover of live music should attend the next concert! The youth bands will play music from Phantom Menace, Saving Private Ryan, and Gladiator, as well as Bohemian Rhapsody in Movie Mayhem on Friday, May 25th at Meymandi Concert Hall.
Next up for the youth bands is a tour. TYBB will head to Atlanta to play in the Atlanta Symphony Hall, and TYBE will head to Ohio to participate in the North American Brass Band Association Championships.
