London Olympics: What to watch today ? the women's events

Female athletes will take center stage today at the Olympics, with the start of women's gymnastics and finals in women's archery, diving, judo, shooting, swimming, and weightlifting.

Coverage of women's gymnastics begins today, and with high hopes for the US team, the preliminaries are sure to feature killer routines and stiff competition.

The competition begins at 9:30 a.m. and lasts until 2:55 p.m Eastern. The US is in subdivision three, along with Canada, Great Britain, and France. Scores from these preliminary rounds will determine which athletes participate in final individual and team events.?

Two events to watch for are the balance beam and the uneven bars. American Jordyn Wieber, the reigning women's all-around World Champion excels at the beam, and her teammate and rival, Gabby Douglas is nicknamed "The Flying Squirrel" for her work on the uneven bars. Both events will air live on nbcolympics.com at 9:40 a.m., though they will be rebroadcast on NBC this afternoon and evening (check your local listings for times).

Final rounds and medal ceremonies for other women's events will be held throughout the day.

US archer?Khatuna Lorig, who came in fourth place in the preliminary rounds, will go up against two South Koreans and two Chinese archers for the gold medal. The match begins at 9:55 a.m.

US divers Kelci Bryant and Abby Johnston will go for gold in women's synchronized diving, also at 9:55 a.m., and in skeet shooting?Kim Rhode will try to become the first American to medal in her event in five straight Olympics.

There will also be final events in women's judo, swimming, and weightlifting, as well as men's events throughout the day. Check nbcolympics.com for specific times and details.
