Acer dips its toes into Ivy Bridge, refreshes two of its desktops with new processors

Image

Now that the Ivy Bridge cat is out of the bag, you can expect to see a deluge of press releases from PC makers over the coming weeks, each of them saying that this computer or that is getting refreshed with Intel's latest processors. From Acer, at least, we expect multiple announcements: it's only ready to talk about a couple of desktops today, with news around laptops and Ultrabooks coming later. Right now, you can choose from several configurations of the Predator AG3620 gaming tower, with the top-shelf $1,200 model packing a 3.4 GHz Core i7 3770 CPU, NVIDIA GT630 graphics, 16GB of RAM and 2TB of storage space. On the budget end, the $799 Gateway D4860-UR14P will feature a 3.1 GHz Core i5 3450 processor, 6GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. Both are available now -- you know, if you've been waiting for precisely this sort of thing.

Vodafone Buys Cable & Wireless For $1.7B, Gives Mobile Carrier Bigger Window On Enterprise, Broadband

Image (1) logotipo_vodafone.thumbnail.jpg for post 363518Big news from the UK this morning: Vodafone, one of Europe's biggest mobile operators, has made a formal offer to buy up the assets of Cable & Wireless Worldwide for ?1 billion ($1.7 billion), a deal that catapults Vodafone into running its own fixed line network in the UK and specifically will give it a much bigger view to winning enterprise business -- a big challenge to BT and a mark of further consolidation in the space. Cable & Wireless, first founded in the nineteeth century and one of the biggest operators in Europe, has fallen on hard times more recently and has run through three chief executives since a restructuring in 2010.

Ottawa Homes With A Garage | Roch St-Georges

So you have narrowed down your list, know the exact type of house you want and intend to look at Ottawa homes with a garage. Well why not? A garage will keep your car safe and sound and will give you extra space to store things. Everything seems fine and dandy until you happen across the perfect house and it doesn?t have a garage. What do you do? Do you keep looking for another home that has one or do you take a look at your other options?

There are other of options available when you are set on finding Ottawa homes with a garage. If the house does not have a garage beside it you can always find out whether local bylaws would allow you to have one added. In most cases you?d be able to add a garage onto your property as long as it meets all the coding for approval.

Once you have established that the odds are good for adding a garage to the Ottawa property, there is nothing wrong with having your real estate agent approach the seller and let them know the situation. Sometimes good old-fashioned communication can lead to an unexpected outcome. It is possible that the seller may reduce the price on the home to factor in the cost of adding a garage. Sometimes a person loves their home so much that they want to see somebody take it that loves it just as much as they do, and are willing to come down in price to see that happen.

Another option you have is to look at pre-built car tents that are very affordable. These can be put right on top of the driveway and, depending on the size of this portable garage, can give you enough room for your car plus storage. These are available at many home improvement stores in Ottawa and are very reasonably priced.

If all else fails, you?ll have to look at other Ottawa homes with a garage until you find one that fits the bill. If you have a specific use for a garage and are not willing to get a home without one you should point this out to your Ottawa real estate agent. He?ll then only show you homes that have a garage so that you don?t end up falling in love with a Ottawa home without one.

If you're reading this, you might be a baboon

Scientists have found that baboons are adept at pattern recognition, being able to?distinguish between real and fake four-letter words about three out of four times.

Dan the?baboon?sits in front of a computer screen. The letters BRRU pop up. With a quick and almost dismissive tap, the monkey signals it is not a word. Correct. Next comes, ITCS. Again, not a word. Finally KITE comes up.

He pauses and hits a green oval to show it is a word. In the space of just a few seconds, Dan has demonstrated a mastery of what some experts say is a form of pre-reading and walks away rewarded with a treat of dried wheat.

Dan is part of new research that shows?baboons?are able to pick up the first step in reading ? identifying recurring patterns and determining which four-letter combinations are words and which are just gobbledygook.

The study shows that reading's early steps are far more instinctive than scientists first thought and it also indicates that non-human primates may be smarter than we give them credit for.

"They've got the hang of this thing," said Jonathan Grainger, a French scientist and lead author of the research.

Baboons?and other monkeys are good pattern finders and what they are doing may be what we first do in recognizing words.

It's still a far cry from real reading. They don't understand what these words mean, and are just breaking them down into parts, said Grainger, a cognitive psychologist at the Aix-Marseille University in France.

In 300,000 tests, the six?baboons?distinguished between real and fake words about three-out-of-four times, according to the study published in Thursday's journal Science.

The 4-year-old Dan, the star of the bunch and about the equivalent age of a human teenager, got 80 percent of the words right and learned 308 four-letter words.

The?baboons?are rewarded with food when they press the right spot on the screen: A blue plus sign for bogus combos or a green oval for real words.

Even though the experiments were conducted in France, the researchers used English words because it is the language of science, Grainger said.

The key is that these animals not only learned by trial and error which letter combinations were correct, but they also noticed which letters tend to go together to form real words, such as SH but not FX, said Grainger. So even when new words were sprung on them, they did a better job at figuring out which were real.

Grainger said a pre-existing capacity in the brain may allow them to recognize patterns and objects, and perhaps that's how we humans also first learn to read.

The study's results were called "extraordinarily exciting" by another language researcher, psychology professor Stanislas Dehaene at the College of France, who wasn't part of this study. He said Grainger's finding makes sense. Dehaene's earlier work says a distinct part of the brain visually recognizes the forms of words. The new work indicates this is also likely in a non-human primate.

This new study also tells us a lot about our distant primate relatives.

"They have shown repeatedly amazing cognitive abilities," said study co-author Joel Fagot, a researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research.

Bill Hopkins, a professor of psychology at the Yerkes Primate Center in Atlanta, isn't surprised.

"We tend to underestimate what their capacities are," said Hopkins, who wasn't part of the French research team. "Non-human primates are really specialized in the visual domain and this is an example of that."

This raises interesting questions about how the complex primate mind works without language or what we think of as language, Hopkins said. While we use language to solve problems in our heads, such as deciphering words, it seems that?baboons?use a "remarkably sophisticated" method to attack problems without language, he said.

Key to the success of the experiment was a change in the testing technique, the researchers said. Thebaboons?weren't put in the computer stations and forced to take the test. Instead, they could choose when they wanted to work, going to one of the 10 computer booths at any time, even in the middle of the night.

The most ambitious?baboons?test 3,000 times a day; the laziest only 400.

The advantage of this type of experiment setup, which can be considered more humane, is that researchers get far more trials in a shorter time period, he said.

"They come because they want to," Fagot said. "What do they want? They want some food. They want to solve some task."

Online Copywriting Courses

If you want to improve your situation and your lifestyle, then the most important thing you can do is to try and improve yourself. Successful people in life knows that we make our own luck, and that 90% of what happens to us is dictated by the way we act and present ourselves to the world. On top of this ? even that 10% that perhaps is outside of our control, can be made much better or much worse by the way that we look at life and the way we choose to react.

?This is why it is so important to invest time and energy into improving ourselves and what we have to offer the world. Self development courses and education are worth their weight in gold purely because they create new opportunities and because they give you new skills and abilities.

?One example of a great new skillset you can learn that will be highly useful whether you want to run your own business, or just improve your employability for others, is copywriting.

Copwriting basically is the act of writing 'copy' ? this being the sort of content that isn't editorial or journalistic.

While a journalist will write content that includes opinions, jokes and ideas; a copywriter will write larger quantities of text that is more practical in nature ? such as typing up transcripts, such as writing press releases, such as writing the blurbs on the back of boxes and books, and such as writing the instruction manuals. The great news for those people who have qualifications and certification in copywriting is that it is something that is in very high demand. Writing essentially is communication, and through your copywriting you make it possible for companies to communicate with large numbers of clients and customers and to create all of their filler and content as necessary.

?What makes copywriting even more useful is the fact that the internet is today so ubiquitous.

The internet here is a huge part of countless business plans as companies use it in order to promote their services and products in an affordable and effective way, and as webmasters make money simply from their advertising and their affiliate links. There is a lot of money here to be made, and if you want a slice of that pie then you will need to be able to write. As is often said online 'content is king'.

?If you get yourself a qualification in copywriting then, what you will find is that first and foremost you make yourself more appealing to a range of prospective employers. Of course you will open up career opportunities as a copywriter, but furthermore you will also create a lot of opportunities for yourself in a range of other careers and professions because copywriting is a skill that is useful in practically all of them. It's another string to your bow that is useful, and it will make you a better communicator as well as allowing you to fill in for your colleagues in various capacities.

?Furthermore, with copywriting though you will also be able to make it on your own should you wish or need to. You can do this simply by providing writing services to webmasters and online businesses for instance, and you can do so by using copywriting in your own business to help promote your products and communicate with clients and customers.

Foundations For In-Home Saunas | Home Improvement Site Best

are best loved for their rejuvenating powers. One version or another has been utilized by more or less every culture from the Mayans to Native Americans to the Greek culture and right through to today. The deep heat cleanses the skin, relieves tension, and helps improve and increase circulation.

Common saunas are wooden rooms with wooden benches for seating that are insulated and heated to between 160 and 195 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat is provided by rocks, usually granite, which can absorb the heat without cracking. The rocks can be heated by a variety of sources but a wood stove is the most economical.

Building a sauna on your own is a fairly ambitious project, but there are many kits on the market that make the job much easier. Some kits can be completed in as little as just one day. Before you pick either an outdoor or indoor sauna, you must first choose the type of foundation that you will need.

The building of the sauna begins with proper planning of the project that includes checking out any local building codes that may put restrictions on your project. As well, unless you are a licensed electrician, one will need to be hired to hook up the heat source.

In order for your sauna to stand the test of time, the foundation needs to be stable and solid. You want it to be permanent and strong so you should use materials that will not deteriorate once the sauna is in place. This is especially important if you live in climates where frost could shift the soil in colder months.

Keep in mind that small buildings tend to shift more than larger ones so you will need footings between 12 inches and up to 48 inches, depending on the climate. The colder the climate, the deeper the footings will be. In warmer places, railroad ties on a level bed of sand and gravel will be secure enough to hold the sauna. Remove the grass from the area that will be the floor of the sauna and fill the area in with course sand and gravel. This gives a base to float the floor which is known as "floating slab" foundation. The sand acts as drainage so there will be no water collecting under the slab, and therefore there will be no freezing to worry about.

If you decide on a concrete foundation, make sure that you think about sloping the floor for drainage purposes. Railroad ties can be used to frame in this foundation. The ties need to be laid into trenches to secure them, and then nailed at the corners where they meet to secure them together. The inside of the frame is lined with a porous fabric liner and then covered with gravel. Let the gravel settle a few days and then add the concrete pavers on the gravel. This can also be the base of a wooden floor. If a wooden floor for the foundation is desired, sloping for drainage is a must, but you also have to make sure the wood is sealed to prevent wood rot.

The foundation is the most important underpinning of sauna construction. Having a solid foundation with quality support is essential to building a sauna. If you are unsure about your abilities to build a solid foundation, you should enlist the services of a qualified professional. It could actually save you a lot of money in the event that you had to bring someone in to repair your own damage.

Home saunas are a great way to destress, and they are easily installed with the help of sauna kits.

Alabama bans beer brand over dirty name on label

A bottle of Dirty Bastard Beer sits on a table in Mobile, Ala., Thursday, April 19, 2012. The state alcoholic beverage control agency said Thursday it has banned the sale of Dirty Bastard beer in the state because of the profanity on its label. Beer and wine are commonly sold in grocery and convenience stores and anyone can see the labels, so staff members rejected the brand because parents may not want young people to see rough language on the shelves, said Bob Martin, an attorney with the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. (AP) ? You can buy Fat Bastard wine in Alabama, but you'll have to go elsewhere for Dirty Bastard beer.

The state alcoholic beverage control agency said Thursday it has banned the sale of that brand of beer in the state because of the profanity on its label.

Beer and wine are commonly sold in grocery and convenience stores and anyone can see the labels, so staff members rejected the brand because parents may not want young people to see rough language on the shelves, said Bob Martin, an attorney with the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.

"That's the whole reason for the rule, to keep dirty pictures and dirty words away from children," he said. "Personally, I believe the staff made the right call."

Workers at the agency consulted sources including the Federal Communications Commission and Wikipedia to develop a list of objectionable words that should not appear on product labels, Martin said, and the list includes "bastard."

The state allows the sale of Fat Bastard wine and also approved the sale of another brand of beer called Raging Bitch, Martin said, but both of those decisions were made years ago.

"I have no idea how or why or exactly when that went through," he said.

He said the agency considered revoking those earlier approvals when it denied the application for Dirty Bastard, but officials decided against such action.

The maker of Dirty Bastard, Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Founders Brewing Co., can appeal the decision to the agency's board, which meets next month. A company spokesman did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Alabama gained notice a few years ago for banning a wine brand that featured a nude nymph on its label. Its decision on the beer is opposed by Free The Hops, a group that advocates for new beer brands in Alabama.

More than one-third of Alabama's 67 counties still prohibit the sale of alcohol, and all but two counties in north Alabama are dry.

Parachute Games and Sports, from the Innocent to the Extreme

This article explains a few things about Parachuting, and if you?re interested, then this is worth reading, because you can never tell what you don?t know.

The use of parachutes for military purposes has been long gone. Although the military can still use it for their own tactics, they are popularly known for extreme sports and children?s games. The use of parachutes has changed along its development. They can now be used by ordinary civilians for recreation.

Most of the time, they are used in extreme sports. A thrill opted for adrenaline junkies and curious people who have enough guts. Sky diving is not the extreme sport. There are different variations of parachute sports and games nowadays.

Parachute sports are also included in the Olympics. There are many events held for enthusiasts and competitors. They are also included in X games, an event that hosts extreme sports including skateboarding and snowboarding.

Parachute games, from mild to extreme

There are many parachute games for children. Different variations have been made and usually involve children that foster cooperation rather than competition. This includes parashuffle, paraswap, parasight, paraseek, paraball, lucky 7, round the plughole, and shoe shuffle.

Adults tend to take things into a more extreme level. People often engage in extreme sports for excitement and to be able do something different than the usual routine of everyday living. There are many sites to engage in parachute sports. Resorts offer parasailing. There are also skydiving clubs that you can join to undergo training. You can choose to make tandem jumps or get a skydiving course.

Those of you not familiar with the latest on Parachuting now have at least a basic understanding. But there?s more to come.

Safe and milder forms of parachute sports are paragliding and parasailing. The first one is a competitive sport while the latter is recreational. A paraglider is a free flying type of aircraft that is launched by foot. Parasailing is wherein a person is towed behind a boat while being attached to a parasail. Paragliding does involve some degree of risk but not as dangerous as the following sports.

An extreme sport variant is the speed skydiving. Unlike the conventional method these one entails a skydiver to jump from an aircraft 13,000 feet above ground. The skydiver accelerates vertically in a head first position into a predetermined measuring zone. The measuring zone begins from 8,850 feet up to 5,570 feet. Altimeters are attached to participants during their jump to measure their average speed as they go through the measuring zone.

Skysurfing on the other hand, as the name suggest uses a board similar to that of a snowboard. The board, which is attached to the skydiver?s feet, enables him or her to do different stunts. Skydivers can land while the board are still on and slide on the ground or kick it off before landing. Skysuring can be very dangerous and only experienced skydivers engage in such sport.

BASE (Buildings, Antennas, Spans [bridges], and Earth [cliffs]) jumping involves jumping off of fixed objects. This is very dangerous because if the parachute is not deployed at the right moment the jumper will die. Base jumpers need to have sharp reflexes because they don?t have enough altitude to free fall.

They need to deploy their parachutes at the right moment because if it?s too late may lead to a bad landing that can cause grave injuries. They should also be skilled in parachute packing to make sure that it will deploy correctly and in controlling their canopies for a harmless landing.

Parachute sports can be exciting but it does involve a lot of risk. If you are interested it?s best to start with the basic and apply for a skydiving course.

Nikon D3200 pics appear on Flickr, make a slightly noisy entrance

Ahead of getting trigger happy with a fully-working D3200 -- rather than the pre-production unit from our hands-on -- we've been checking out some official 24-megapixel samples on Flickr. To our eyes, the images befit the smaller pixel size, namely sharp and high-res, but with a good dollop of noise on the side. Albeit completely unscientific, a blowup compared to an image from the similarly priced Sony NEX-5N looks grainier at the same 1600 ISO. On the plus side, the JPEGs show almost zero compression artifacts, so budget-minded shooters could easily print poster-sized images -- of course, providing they have enough light for a low ISO shot in the first place.

Forget a milli, Diddy is working on a billi.

The rapper, label mogul and celebrity endorser is inching closer to being rap's first billion-dollar man according to the Forbes list of hip-hop's wealthiest artists. The finance magazine's "Forbes Five" short list of the richest rappers were already collectively worth over $1 billion.

Diddy took the top spot with an estimated net worth of $550 million, which has been boosted lately by his deal with Ciroc vodka, which reportedly pays him in the double-digit millions thanks to his share of the profits from sales, which have spiked over the last year by 122 percent.

As a bonus, Diddy will earn a nine-figure payday if the brand is ever sold to another company.

Diddy's fortune is also fed by his stakes in the Sean John and Enyce clothing lines, as well as the Blue Flame marketing firm, his Bad Boy record label and pieces of a number of tech startups. But the magazine said his most recent deal is the one that could push him into the billionaire boys club. The mogul's deal with Comcast to launch the Revolt cable channel — which he owns outright — in 2013 might be worth low-to-mid nine figures in the next few years.

His pal Jay-Z is the next man up at an estimated $460 million. One of the few on the list who still puts out albums and tours, Jay continues to earn money from his music career, as well as the proceeds from the $204 million sale of his Rocawear clothing label in 2007. He pocketed plenty of change when he signed a $150 million deal with Live Nation in 2008 and gets added revenue from his stakes in the New Jersey Nets, his 40/40 club chain, the ad firm Translation and cosmetics company Carol's Daughter.

"Who's going to be hip-hop's first billionaire is still to be determined," said ad man Steve Stoute, who founded and co-owns Translation with Jay-Z. "But clearly Jay and Puffy are far and away positioned to surpass that."

Third on the list is the rap icon who recently blew some minds by bringing back Tupac as a hologram
 at Coachella, Dr. Dre.

The legendary beat-maker and rapper has an estimated fortune of $270 million, doubling since last year thanks to the $300 million cellphone maker HTC paid to buy a 51 percent stake in his Beats Electronic business. Sources told the magazine that both Dre and partner Interscope boss Jimmy Iovine owned one-third of the company before the deal, putting Dre's haul at $85 million after taxes, with his remaining stake worth around $100 million.

Cash Money Records co-founder Birdman earned the #4 slot with an estimated $125 million fortune, mostly derived from the smash success of such artist as Drake, Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne. He could creep up later this year when Cash Money's deal with Universal is up and a bidding war could erupt over the right to distribute the label's music.

"One of my motivations in life is to be a billionaire," said Birdman. "We're going to keep working hard until we get our brand to be as big as possible. That's the goal in life, that's what I live for."

Business-savvy rapper 50 Cent rounds out the list at #5 with an estimated fortune of $110 million. He earned $100 million one the sale of his part of Vitaminwater in 2007 and he still rakes in tens of millions a year from record sales, touring and clothing, as well as acting jobs, 50-themed video games, shoes, books and a new headphone line.

Though the top five all have a shot at reaching the billion mark, with the recent $1 billion sale of Instagram inspired Stoute to say that it may not be Diddy or Jigga who reach the mountaintop first. "You don't necessarily know, given what a guy like Kanye or will.i.am is capable of doing," said Stoute. "In a world where people are creating applications that sell for a billion dollars, you never know who's going to come out of left field."

T-Mobile introduces the HTC One S live from New York

T-Mobile threw a little get-together high above New York's Meatpacking district tonight, and we were there to catch a glimpse at the star of the show: the HTC One S. The carrier was celebrating the launch of its cut of the One line, the 4.3-inch mid-leveler packing the same dual-core S4 processor and 8 MP camera as its big brother, the One X. We've already put the S though its paces these past few weeks, but we couldn't help fawning over it again tonight. While the screen isn't top of the line, the size, Sense 4.0+ Ice Cream Sandwich, and camera have us downright smitten. And while the S was the guest of honor, T-Mobile included some other goodies for its guests, including a look at its new ad campaign (yes, Carly was there) and a live performance from Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.

You can check out our hands-on with T-Mobile's HTC One S here. It'll be available next week, April 25, for $199 on contract. Hit the break for some shots from tonight's gathering.
