Leila Monroe: At Rio's Giant Trash Dump, Protecting People and Oceans Alike

Made world-famous by the artwork of Vic Muniz and the film Waste Land, this massive urban dump was, until recently, the last resort for honest employment for many poor Brazilians. Lacking municipal recycling pickup or facilities, nearly all of Rio's garbage was dumped in astonishing quantities in Jardim Gramacho -- food waste, glass, plastic, metals, books, and every crazy random thing one can imagine. The trash picker's, called catadores were then forced to scramble over piles of trash, risking constant injury and putrid conditions to recover huge quantities of valuable materials carelessly discarded. This situation was toxic for the trash pickers and the environment alike. The water, land, and air around the dump received a cocktail of toxins and waste spilled out, or was burned, around the dump.

As part of our work at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), I joined a few members of the NRDC team for a visit to Jardim Gramacho and an inspirational meeting with the inspirational leader Ti?o dos Santos, president of the Association of Waste Pickers of Jardim Gramacho. There, we saw in living color how closely the health of humans and the environment are tied together. Poorly planned dumps like Jardim Gramacho are among the many sources of vast quantities of waste, especially plastics used for packaging, that end up as pollution on every coast, and in every ocean, river and lake on Earth. Waste also flows directly from city streets where it is improperly discarded -- out into the ocean through storm drains.

Fortunately, there are exciting efforts underway to change this whole system for the better, and Ti?o is among those leading the sea change. He and his colleagues were featured in the award-winning film Waste Land, and the funds from the sale of Muniz's artwork have allowed the pickers to formalize and negotiate for more rights. With the closing of Jardim Gramacho -- it was closed because of the tremendous environmental damage it causes from the leaching of toxins into the soil and sea water -- Ti?o has moved on to a wider campaign to educate the public about the impact of carelessly using and discarding trash.

Public education is important, but it also must be paired with facilities that can accept recyclable materials; and ultimately, we need to put an end to the careless use and discarding of these materials.

NRDC is working at Rio+20, and beyond, to advance systemic solutions to the problem of plastic waste in the marine environment. To do this, we have created a Global Call and Commitment to Stop Plastic Pollution. This website showcases governments, businesses, and organizations that are helping to stop pollution at it's source.

We need manufacturers and producers that use vast quantities of cheap plastic to deliver goods to market to bear more responsibility for the impacts of their products, especially the plastic packaging it comes in. Cities have trouble paying for recycling, and in much of the world, there simply isn't recycling, or even basic trash pick-up. This systemic change is known as extended producer responsibility.

Here at the Rio+20 summit, and beyond, we are calling on governments, businesses, and organizations to commit to participating in extended producer responsibility and other waste reduction measures. With these steps, we can create a healthier environment for all.

Chris Brummer: Who Wins if Greece Exits?

If you've been brave enough to peruse any newspaper over the last month, you've seen headlines stressing the likely enormous consequences if voters in the country give the euro an effective vote of no confidence. In the short run, capital would be yanked from Greece, contagion would cause already historically high bond yields in Italy and Spain to spike, and lending on the continent could freeze up sparking chaos and bank failures throughout Europe. The Eurozone itself could eventually break apart.

A doomsday "Eurogeddon" would be bad (actually really, really bad). But there is an eclectic assortment of industries and players that could do well. Here's a crib sheet for what we can consider the "Silver Lining Club":

Euro short sellers. Sure hedge funds betting on higher commodity prices right now are getting hammered, but not all put all their eggs in the oil and copper basket. Many have ramped up their bets against the euro to a record high. An anti-austerity vote would likely push Greece out of the euro, and reward these pessimists as the economic and political outlook for the Eurozone worsened.

The U.S. Treasury (and qualified borrowers). Our stock market might collapse along with Europe's, but a Greek exit would increase appetite for US Treasuries, as investors seek a safe haven to park their capital. The benefits would flow not only to the government, but also to other issuers and qualified borrowers of dollar denominated debt influenced by government rates. So if you want to refinance anything from home mortgages or, as Larry Summers suggests, the entire US federal government's debt, June 18th will be a good day to do so if Greeks bail on the bail-out.

Emerging Market Value Shoppers. Because a Greek exit would place enormous downward pressure on the euro, a no vote would provide a golden opportunity for firms looking to pick up cheap European assets. At least, this will be the case if you have the cash--and emerging markets and commodity rich countries have plenty of it after years of trade and current account surpluses. So not surprisingly, companies in Canada, Hong Kong, and Brazil are among the biggest investors in Europe, behind the US and Switzerland. Meanwhile, Europe has become the number one destination for Chinese bargain hunters as the crisis has punished not only the euro, but also the continent's stock markets, making acquisitions much more attractive.

Greek exporters (well, at least some). In the longer run, if Greece eventually pulls out of the euro, and presumably reinstates the Drachma, Greek exporters will be well positioned to begin to compete more effectively in key industries like manufacturing (and tourism). But only the daring will be inclined to lend and finance Greek companies, so those that are already well capitalized will be the ones best able to take full advantage of more favorable trade conditions.

Asian regional banks. A financial crisis would put a severe strain on the European banking system. Along with Basel III, the new international capital requirements for banks, heightened financial stress would inevitably cause EU banks to retreat from some overseas activities. My colleague at the Milken Institute, Cindy Li, has noted that their departure will create an especially good opportunity for regional well-capitalized Asian regional banks looking to grow their market share in the region. Indeed, banks in Australia and Singapore banks are already reportedly expanding into India and China.

Sub-Saharan Africa. For firms looking for yield, Africa will probably keep looking better and better. Although the commodities downturn could ramp up if the global economy slows, investing in the continent may become even more attractive as QE 3 (4 and 5?) programs roll out of American and European central banks, depressing interest rates. Studies have for several years shown Africa to be generating the highest rate of return of any region in the world, and GDP growth continues grow steadily, with estimates next year exceeding 5%. Plus the rule of law is arguably expanding just as quickly, with fewer serious conflicts now than in decade past, making the continent safer for foreign investment.

The lesson? Politicians and investors should recognize that in the face of a Greek exit, cash and safety will be king. Those who can offer one or the other (or both) will be able to at least partially shield themselves from the storm. The rest will be left out in the cold.

Police say they found body of fugitive Buffalo surgeon

Authorities in Buffalo, N.Y., announce that they have recovered the body of Dr. Timothy Jorden in a wooded area near his home. Jorden suffered what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Updated 6:35 p.m.:?A scrubs-clad body found in a ravine south of Buffalo, N.Y., is the trauma surgeon suspected of shooting his ex-girlfriend at a hospital, police said Friday.?He was killed by a?self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head, they said.

The body of Timothy Jorden was found in the woods along Eighteenmile Creek behind his home in Lake View, N.Y.?One of Jorden?s neighbors had told police Thursday that he heard a gunshot in the area around 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

Police launched a nationwide manhunt for?Jorden, 49,?after hospital administrative assistant Jacqueline Wisniewski, 33,?of West Seneca,?was?found?dead in a stairwell at the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.

Jorden was considered armed and dangerous. He?joined the National Guard in high school, went into the Army after graduation and served with the Army?s Special Forces, first as a weapons expert, then as a medic in the Caribbean, Japan and Korea.

Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda?at a Friday evening news conference said Jorden apparently planned the killing and suicide. Jorden, he said, had withdrawn about $36,000 and had been giving away gifts of cash.

No suicide note was found, Derenda said.

A?personal video surveillance system at his home showed Jorden?returned?to his residence?at 8:37 a.m. immediately following the shooting at the hospital, returned to his car and?re-entered the house and?four minutes?later went out his back door?to the woods behind his home, he said.?Hamburg and Buffalo police found the body Friday morning. A handgun of the same type used in the killing was found in his hand, Derenda said.

Hospital video had shown Jorden toting a handgun and a shotgun before the shooting, he said. Jorden apparently lured Wisniewski to the stairwell through a 17-minute phone conversation with her. He shot her five times with the handgun, Derenda said.

A friend of Wisniewski?s told WIVB-TV that she used to live with Jorden but left him because she believed he was having affairs with other women. But, Heather Shipley said, ?when they broke up, he wouldn?t let go.?

She said Jorden had once held Wisniewski captive in her home for a day and a half, wielding a knife, and he also put a GPS tracking device in her car.

?She told me if anything happened to her,? Shipley said, ?that it was him.?

A nationwide manhunt continues for Dr. Timothy Jorden, a surgeon in Buffalo, N.Y., suspected of murdering a receptionist, who was also his ex-girlfriend, at the Erie County Medical Center Wednesday.

Neighbors and colleagues said they suspected something was wrong with Jorden, a decorated surgeon and respected community member, when he began putting less effort into things he previously cared about, became less friendly, and changed his appearance.

?I saw him at the beginning of the season and noticed how much weight he had lost,? June DuPree, a neighbor of Jorden?s in an exclusive cluster of homes on the shore of Lake Erie, told the Associated Press. ?He said, ?Yeah, I lost a little bit.? But it was more than a little bit. It was a lot. He wasn?t too friendly that time I saw him. He just didn?t want to talk.?

One of Jorden?s colleagues estimated Jorden had dropped about 75 pounds in recent months.

Additionally, neighbors say Jorden?s waning attention to maintaining the well-manicured grounds of his half-million dollar home in his Lake View neighborhood south of Buffalo suggested something might be wrong.

?He had a lot of money invested in his house and the landscaping. And when I came back from Florida in May, it was really neglected. I was just shocked,? neighbor Tom Wrzosek told the AP.

?We presumed he was sick, that maybe he had some sort of major ailment,? he said. ?He was sick, but not in the way we thought he was sick.?

Jorden?s colleagues told the Buffalo News that Jorden, normally a soft-spoken and even-keeled man, had been acting strangely in recent months, avoiding eye contact and basic communication.

A police official told the Buffalo News?that Jorden may have been having mental health issues or ?some type of serious physical ailment that caused the drastic weight loss.?

Jorden's office may offer clues to his mental status. A police source said it appeared he had been living in the office. Hidden above ceiling tiles, police found rancid takeout containers and dirty laundry, the Buffalo News reported.

Jorden has been licensed to practice medicine in New York for a decade. He has a medical degree from the University of Buffalo and trained at the Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash. He received his certification from the American Board of Surgery in 2004.

Microsoft to buy Yammer for $1.2 billion -- report

Business software company Yammer has agreed to sell itself to Microsoft for $1.2 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.

It?s not clear when the Yammer deal will be completed or announced, the report said.

The deal is a sign that Microsoft may be trying to bolster its popular Office software suite, according to the Journal.

Yammer is an enterprise social network that provides a secure way for employees to communicate and share files.

It is one of a set of new software companies -- including Box, Dropbox, Jive Software and Basecamp -- that are providing workers with new tools to communicate, store and share files at work, or edit them along with their coworkers, the newspaper noted.

The Yammer acquisition follows a handful of similar deals where large, established software companies purchase smaller players who are focused on social media.

For example, in May Oracle acquired Virtue, a cloud-based marketing company, while Buddy Media, another social media marketing platform, was acquired by Salesforce.com in early June.

These new companies are a threat to Microsoft, which pioneered software for the workplace, the Journal said. However, the software also links in to and enhances Microsoft software products, such as Outlook e-mail, the newspaper said.

The Journal also points out that the Yammer deal marks the second time Microsoft has acquired a company that?s about to do an initial public offering.

Last May Microsoft acquired Internet video chat company Skype for $8.5 billion in cash -- the biggest acquisition in Microsoft?s history. Prior to the deal, Skype owners had filed documents to take the company public, the Journal said.

LANSING (WWJ/AP) - The Michigan House has voted to prohibit using state money to build another bridge across the Detroit River.

The House passed the supplemental budget bill Thursday by a vote of 79-31, with the bridge language inserted by Grandville Republican Rep. Dave Agema. He said neither Gov. Rick Snyder nor anybody else can spend money lawmakers haven?t authorized.

Snyder seeks to collaborate with Canada to build a span to supplement the privately owned Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. ?He said Michigan would benefit from the project by way of increased international trade was well as jobs created by the project.

Snyder spokeswoman Sara Wurfel says taxpayers won?t finance it.

The Republican governor has said he hoped the GOP-led House and Senate would back the plan but pursued other options after failing to get legislation through the Senate.

Snyder has said Michigan?s constitution includes Canada as a potential party to an agreement. ?He was expected to make an?announcement?about a plan for the project on Friday. ?It wasn?t clear whether he would still do so following this move by the House.

Ambassador Bridge owner Matty Maroun?has publicly opposed the project in favor of a span that would be in his control, and is expected to challenge it in court.

50 Cent Sets July 3 Release Date For Long-Delayed LP

50 Cent has confirmed that his next official LP, Five (Murder By Numbers), is set to drop on July 3. In a wide-ranging conversation with Philadelphia radio station Hot 107.9, which comes off his recent appearance on "Oprah's Next Chapter," Fif also touched on label politics and boxer Floyd Mayweather's stint in prison.

The new album, which follows the back-to-basics Lost Tape and The Big Ten freebies, will be the last in his turbulent deal with Interscope. "I said I was gonna put a record out that was completely up to album standard, and I'm gonna do that. I worked on this album for a long time. It's been three years," he said.

The reason for the delay? Label politics. 50 actually gave his longtime home Interscope credit for his musical successes, but noted that it's easier to see their failures when an artist doesn't have excessive hype. "Labels at different points, they drop the ball," Fif said. "It's not visible when the momentum is feverish. For me, with Interscope, all the success I've had in music has been with them."

The G-Unit CEO, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, also gave an update on his friend Floyd Mayweather, who is currently serving a three-month sentence for domestic battery of an ex-girlfriend in front of their two children. "He's not doing good right now," said 50. "He only been out seven hours since he been in there. They doin' everything to make this difficult." Right before Mayweather began his sentence last month, Fif told MTV News that the boxer has a deep connection with music. "Floyd has a huge passion for music that people don't know about," 50 explained. "It's a big part of what makes him comfortable and takes his mind off of how hard he has to work to stay being the #1 fighter in the world."

Activists: Syrian government forces send in helicopters after failed armoured assaults

BEIRUT - Syrian troops attacked a central, rebel-held town with helicopter gunships Monday and shelled other restive areas across the nation, activists said.

The aerial assault targeted the strategic river crossing town of Rastan, which has resisted repeated government offensives for months, the activists said.

Violence has escalated in recent weeks with both sides ignoring a U.N. brokered cease-fire that was supposed to go into effect April 12 but never took hold.

"The regime is now using helicopters more after its ground troops suffered major losses," said Rami Abdul-Rahman of the Britain-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which uses a network of sources on the ground. "Dozens of vehicles have been destroyed or damaged" since the end of May, he said.

Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi recently said that rebels are now using sophisticated anti-tank missiles. Videos posted by activists over the past week have shown many destroyed tanks and armoured personnel carriers.

The Observatory and another activist coalition, the Local Coordination Committees, also reported government shelling in the central provinces of Hama and Homs, where Rastan is located, as well as the southern region of Daraa, the northern province of Aleppo, and suburbs of the capital Damascus and Deir el-Zour in the east.

The LCC said 33 people were killed around the country on Monday. It was impossible to independently confirm the toll.

The Observatory reported at least 24 deaths throughout Syria for the day including four civilians and an army defector in shelling in the area of Ashara in Deir el-Zour. It said another eight unidentified bodies had been discovered nearby. It reported three dead in the Hama shelling, four in Rastan and four near the northern city of Idlib.

The Observatory also said a bomb targeted a security force in the northern city of Idlib, killing seven soldiers and a civilian. There was no immediate confirmation from state media.

In Damascus, state-run news agency SANA said authorities foiled an attempt to blow up a car rigged with 700 kilograms (1,540 pounds) of explosives in the Damascus suburb of Chebaa. Experts dismantled it Monday, SANA said.

Syrian activists say 13,000 people have been killed in violence since the uprising began in March 2011.

The bloodshed has led to broad condemnation of the regime from the international community, although Russia, Iran and China have stood by President Bashar Assad. Russia and China have vetoed two Security Council resolutions that threatened possible sanctions against Syria.

Russia has refused to support any move that could lead to foreign intervention in Syria, Moscow's last significant ally in the Middle East.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will visit Syria's ally Iran on Wednesday.

In Israel, the deputy military chief warned that Syria's large chemical weapons stocks could be trained on the Jewish state. According to Maj. Gen. Yair Naveh, Syria has the largest arsenal of chemical weapons in the world. If the Syrians had the chance, he said, they would "treat us the same way they treat their own people."

Syria has not declared its chemical weapons stocks so the exact size is not known. Among other things, Israel is worried that such weapons could fall into the hands of anti-Israel militants should the regime crumble.

Israeli radio stations and newspapers carried Naveh's remarks on Monday. He delivered them Sunday night at a ceremony in Jerusalem commemorating fallen soldiers.

Israel has been watching the carnage in neighbouring Syria with increasing concern. The two countries have fought major wars and multiple attempts to reach a peace deal have failed. Syria has strong ties to Iran, Israel's most fearsome enemy, and to Palestinian and Lebanese militants who have fought wars against Israel.
